Cathy and I live and work on 125 acres in southern DeWitt County, on land that has been in my family for 130 years. Cathy is a retired biologist and a 30-year veteran of the vegetable garden and fruit orchard. She is a Master Naturalist, specializing in native plants and pollinators. I am a veterinarian, now working 2 or 3 days a week in shelters in Victoria and Cuero.
We started raising food animals about 8 years ago, because we wanted a source of meat that was healthier and humanely raised. We now raise chickens, turkeys, sheep, goats, cattle and livestock guardian dogs – along with two vegetable gardens, a fruit orchard and native-pollinator garden. We practice Holistic Management, a system of management and decision-making designed to work with natural cycles to heal the land and to actively work towards our vision of the best possible future.
